Complicated. Until 1991 it was part of Southern Yugoslavia, bordered by Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Albania. About 2m. population. 600.000 in Skopje. Just under 10.000 sq.miles. Speaking Macedonian and Albanian.
Two thirds Christian Orthodox, one third Muslim. Stayed out of the Yugoslav wars of the early '90's. Badly affected by Kosovo war in 1999 when nearly 400.000 Albanians came in as refugees, they soon returned to Albania, but disputes between ethic Albanians and Macedonians have only recently been resolved.
The economy is sluggish with high unemployment. The country is very green and mountainous with many lakes. Famous for Turkish bazaars, cheap wine, churches and bagpipes (!?) Hospitable and friendly.
